Most humanoids in this story have a rather light skintone, this color can subconciously be changed, depending on moods or activities. For most this is as easy as breathing and it requires little energy.
Shaping parts of the body in a different way requires high amounts of energy for the humanoids, most choose to look the same all their lives because of this.
