Rune papers are special pieces of paper that runecasters write their spells on. The position, size, and intent the runes are written with determine the effect of the spell. However prepared spells have to be given a steady stream of energy to keep them viable, with larger and more complex spells requires more energy than smaller ones. This is why Rurik has to make such a powerful spell on the spot instead of having it already set up beforehand.
