I have long had an affinity for bums with a shtick. I appreciate the effort. I mean, anyone can just stand on a corner and ask for money. But the true panhandler will give you a little something extra. There was a guy at Georgetown where I went to undergrad who hung outside a popular deli just off campus. Give this guy money one time, he’d engage you in a little conversation, and then remember everything you talked about…forever. I have friends who still run into him in DC from time to time, many years later. He’ll pick those conversation right back up where they left off. Outstanding memory on this guy.

Jinx Jeffers, the only panhandler in Felix’s small-town, has a shtick. Make sure you check out his signs every time he shows up.
