As of 2006 China has 40 panda reserves compared to the 13 they had two decades ago. Through panda exchange programs and combined efforts from zoos and agencies around the world, the number of pandas in captivity is on the rise with a record 34 (30 surviving) panda cubs born in 2006. This number is up from even just a decade ago when the survival rate of a cub in captivity was practically 0%.
The main threats to the panda population are habitat loss, population fragmentation and the decline of the genetic pool, bamboo die-off, and poachers. (Poachers today face life in prison for killing a panda.)
China's science may currently be imperfect, but with the help of people all around the world they are doing their best to protect their national treasure.
