Another reason the giant panda was thought to be in the same family as raccoons, was its similarity to the red panda, which the giant panda was named after. Both animals have distinct coloring, and a diet that consists of mostly bamboo. Recent testing put the red panda in its own family closely linked to skunks, raccoons and badgers.
Giant pandas are excellent climbers and young cubs will spend most of their days asleep safely in high branches while mom is off eating bamboo. Panda cubs are also near indestructible, as it's not uncommon for them to fall out of trees while sleeping. :P
Giant pandas are the only members of the bear family that have slitted eyes like a cat. The closest related bear to the giant panda is the Spectacled Bear of South America.
If you love cute animals, go do a search for red pandas! They are adorable as well. :)
