Other interesting physical aspects of turtles: Tortoises tend to have higher domed shells to protect from predators, while aquatic turtles have more aerodynamic shells for speed underwater. Some aquatic turtles are capable of absorbing oxygen through their skin which lets them stay underwater for long enough periods of time to hibernate.
They have excellent eyesight and sense of smell. Hearing and sense of touch are also both good, with the shell itself having plenty of nerve endings. Most turtles have five toes on each foot, though some species will have as little as three per foot.
