Page Description: Standing on a windswept platform halfway up the Buccaneer’s conning tower, Rasovich expands on his enigmatic warning to Pinky.
Commentary: Yet another page that I’ve revisited. I made the text a bit smaller and adjusted the page size. The text was HUGE before and it was covering up that lovely grey sky on the top left. It’s important that’s uncovered now because it was quite a significant part of the artwork here… When I went to colour this page, I realised I’d already done a large 2 foot X2 foot acrylic painting on plywood of the top left panel. So rather than colour the inferior pencil drawing image, I just scanned in the full painting and pasted it all in as part of the page. It took a LOT of scanning and cutting and pasting to get it in, but I had to do it. A lot of the background in the painting is just unpainted ply; I wanted to show that lovely wood-grain sky… And then my masses of text covered it all up. But here it is again. The top pic of Pinky’s face was made of two sketches superimposed, one over the other. It turned out a bit weird though. I like the colours there. The final image of the Buccaneer was a bit tricky. Like almost every machine, building, costume and anything else I draw, I collected lots of reference material and then just designed my own battleship. So even though I drew that whole thing out of my head, it WAS originally based on real ships; mostly the 1920’s-30’s refits of the Queen Elizabeth class Battleships, Malaya, Barham, Queen Elizabeth, Warspite, and Valliant. But I also used the Texas a bit, and that messed me up sometimes.
A note: I've decided to upload one page a day until I catch up with the main site. Just because I like to write about these pages and it's really hard to do that when I upload 10 at a go, (which I hate doing). Meanwhile, if you want to see the latest, just click the “Main site†link.
