Ash switches pretty fast between giving his all to save Pikachu and giving up. This isn't actually a case of split personality; he's just in conflict with himself - A: He wants to be the Legendary Moron, and B: He needs a pokÃƒÂ©mon. If he loses his pokÃƒÂ©mon the first thing he does as he starts his journey, it's more or less proof that he's hopelessly moronic. Then again, he won't be able to continue his journey for some time if he loses Pikachu.

That's a real dilemma for our "hero". :)
