Noble families and clans on Ssilir generally take the names of animals or natural phenomena as their clan names. The creature or phenomenon becomes the family symbol and is displayed on their banners and features prominently in their artwork, especially their body painting. Giving a noble a gift of art with his or her clan symbol is considered very thoughtful.

Certain formalities and rules are observed. For example, only priest clans can use birds, which are considered sacred to the Ssilirians, as their family name and symbol.

The razrak is a stealthy jungle predator mammal. Qul’s clans traditionally sends many of its sons off to the military as scouts and spies, so the razrak was adopted as the clan symbol when the clan was formed ages ago.
