Gary caught Sandshrew, Ekans and Mankey. That means he now has Charmander, Pidgey, Rattata, Sandshrew, Ekans and Mankey. That's a full house of six. He's got the most Pokemon out of the main characters.

I don't show it, but Gary bumps into the VGL while walking. The only way you know is by Gary's lying on the ground and what VGL says.

Gary's angry because he didn't get fame and fortune by himself and his own accomplishments. That would be a reference to the Pokemon Special manga, in which Blue hates his grandfather because he did all the work for him. But soon, he learns under Chuck, and becomes the best Pokemon Trainer in the Kanto/Johto nation.
