The strategy is using Revives right after you faint to simply heal yourself without worrying about your item usage because you're so rich already from several years of playing the game.

But then, I realized a plothole was present. No way Red could find Revives that early in the game except in Saffron. So I said he picked some up before he entered the gym with James.

I was also thinking of another plothole, the fact that there was also no way Red had enough money. However, I had no solution for this other than 'the gym leaders give a lot of money.'

That doesn't work because the strategy involves a large amount of Revives, and with Red's cash, he could probably only afford 3.
