I have been writing a story called Kensai for a little under 2 years now, and have got a pretty fleshed out world for it. Enter Privateer, the story set 100 years after my book, in the same world. Now, I shall explain a few things.

There is only the Empire, the vast super-power ruled from Earth. Within it lie the Ethless Republic, the Sectoid Hives and the Ork Confederacy, but they are all part of, pay taxes to and obey the Empire. Just a few years before Privateer the 100,000,000,000th human was born, bringing the total population of the Empire to 170 billion.
There is great political stability, ever since the 'Last War' which pacified the Orks, the 10 feet tall giant species that Trugga is a member of, the army has been allowed to wind down in strength, decomissioning many ships. This led to an increase in piracy, smuggling and other petty, but organised, crime. To cope, private organisations were paid by the Empire to eliminate these threats, a costly, but potentially lucrative, business. The Good Luck is just one of these ships.
