Page Summary: Pan to TONY’S TIMELINE, as we see him confined to a wheelchair. We get a flashback of what happened to him, dreams of college-ball glory days cut abruptly short.
Panel 1. Bird’s eye shot of TONY GHIOTONNE, still in his wheelchair. He is parked at the sideline of an empty football field. There’s a football sitting somewhere on the field that Tony’s fixated on. Tony’s timeline is very post WWII, fifties, mom-and-apple-pie. He’s wearing jeans, sneakers, his old jersey with the number “7†on it, and his college letter-jacket (perhaps the letter “Gâ€Â).
CAPTION: TEN YEARS IS A LONG TIME TO WAIT.
CAPTION: FOR ANYTHING.
Panel 2. Worms-eye view of Tony, who looks on at the football sitting on the field.
CAPTION: FOR ME, IT’S BEEN A FATE WORSE THAN A DEATH SENTENCE.
CAPTION: AFTER ALL, I MAY AS WELL BE DEAD. RIGHT?
CAPTION: UNFORTUNATELY, NOT BEING DEAD MAKES YOU REMEMBER THE TIMES YOU WERE AT MOST ALIVE.
Panel 3. Flashback. Wide Shot. Tony is playing in his college championship game, the crowd and everyone on the sidelines going wild as he runs a ball in for a winning touchdown.
CAPTION: THE SMELL OF THE GRASS IS WHAT GETS YOU THINKING ABOUT IT FIRST. I CAN EVEN SMELL THE SWEAT ON THE FIELD.
CAPTION: ALL MY VICTORIES, BROUGHT BY THE GLORY OF YOUTH.
CAPTION: COACH TOLD ME I COULD HAVE WRITTEN MY OWN TICKET.
Panel 4. Flashback. Medium Shot. Tony is clobbered by a couple of defending players, hard!
NO COPY
Panel 5. Flashback. Another Angle. Tony lies on the field surrounded by paramedics, his teammates, etc. The head coach is crouched on the ground trying to reassure Tony.
CAPTION: HE TRIED TO BE BRAVE, FOR ALL OF US. BUT I COULD HEAR IT IN HIS VOICE.
CAPTION: IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD HIM UNSURE ABOUT ANYTHING.
