The little girl Max is holding is their daughter Dana Sterling, Heroine of the second installment of the Robotech saga. It will be her destiny to face and battle the Robotech Masters, the very precursor race that spawned the Zentreadi, her mothers creators. The family standing with Rick and Lisa are the Grants; Vincent, Claudia's brother, Jean his wife and Claudia's sister-in-law, and little Bowie, their son, Claudia's nephew and Dana's sidekick during the second Robotech wars.
Vince & Jean were introduced in Robotech II: the Sentinels a proposed but unfinished second series that covered the SDF-3's pioneer mission to the Masters homeworld.
It would have explained the fate of the SDF-3 and its crew. The second series was suppose to end at the same time as Dana's adventures did and was to give way to the third installment in the original series.
