How do you tone backgrounds?! I just can't do it! I can draw them~ but when it comes to toning I manage to fluff them up totally. How can I fix that last panel? Any suggestions…? TT___TT

Well, here's the next paaage~ God I'm being shitty slow right now… muuu… I'm sorry I'm sorry. ;__; Vote to see the next page all sketchy~~~ Please? XD I've totally fallen down the ratings everywhere… *laugh* My own fault for not keeping up my update schedule.

I said on the last page I was gonna babble about backgrounds~ I'll try and keep this short and concise… XD

Essentially, my biggest tip, especially if you're doing interiors, is to draw plans of the rooms/house you're going to be drawing - like a map. I've got these for all of the character's houses; even one's I'm only going to draw one or two times. It just gives you a better idea of where things are placed when drawing them from different angles. It also gives you a good sense of the size of objects in the room. I've seen all too many times items of furniture drawn huuuuge or teeny tiny in comparison to the characters because the background has been badly planned.

This takes me to the second main thing about BGs… draw the BG first! Always always! It sucks if you draw your character in some complicated position sitting or reaching for something or leaning on something and you have to draw the background around them - which can lead to inconsistancies because you're drawing the background to fit the character and characters are dynamic~ so if the chara changes, the BG will change. ^^;

Thirdly, try to draw your characters in proportion with the background~ this is the one I struggle with… XD I'm definately guilty of lengthening limbs in order to make the character look the right size for the background I've drawn for them… It takes practise… but go around your house and look and see how big things are in proportion to you. The bannister on the stairs will be around hip to navel height while chairs are usually set just above the knee, toilets too, sofas are a little lower. Desks and dining tables come up to about crotch height, maybe a bit lower, while kitchen counters are higher… Doors are about one and a half heads bigger than a person~ sometimes more or less depending on their height… ahhaa… after a while observing this sort of thing you should be able to recall it from memory and not have to look round the house, measuring things up to yourself. X3

I had another one! I can't remember…! Sorry. If I think of it I'll say about it next time~ :) Hope this is helpful!
