[11] Wastefulness of commericalism
Black_Kitty onBack when I first started RT, I was in first year university trying to do a double major in visual studies and English. Visual studies is the studio component of fine arts and it brought me in contact with a lot of professional artists who made a living doing modern art.
But when I first went entered university, I was quite doubtful towards modern art. A bad experience in my final year of high school art made me believe that modern art has allowed many artists to BS their way through the art world.
My view on art has changed a lot over the years. I actually really like modern art. I don't understand all of what I see but I recognize the possibilities and validity that can be found in modern art. I also understand that with modern art, sometimes context is extremely important/
Art in all forms is a type of communication and because of that, it's a two way street. The problem with modern art is that oftentimes, it would become so into the personal or so abstract, that it becomes indecipherable without an explaination. And when people don't understand, they often resort to judging a piece of work by how long and how much effort they think the piece took. (And that's not really the point of the piece to begin with.)
On the same token, viewers have never really done their share to try to understand art. It doesn't mean you have to carry a textbook with you but it means looking at something beyond 10 seconds and not right off the bat assume the artist is full of crap. I can talk and scream all I want but if a person's not listening, the communication failed.
It doesn't mean all art is gold mind you and like every other form of communication, you're free to disagree or not like something.
Anyhow, back to RT. ^^;;;
