SAW 2008: The "poor harmless monster" (another nearly-funny remark) was based on my brother's cat, whom I recently tried to trap in a cardboard box. I don't hate animals, but I like to goof on that cat.

So in pane 2, we get the story on the old guy with the wings, Ace, the "living legend of the Gulf War." Obviously, it's odd that a vet from a war that was about a decade before this comic was retirement-age, so let's do another explanation for where the joke was supposed to be…

Ace has the most complicated history of any character here. I originally created a magic badass cowboy by that name years ago. Then I made him a vampire and gave him bat wings. Then I decided on a new joke for him: like Captain America, he was a vert frozen in ice, However, where Cap was frozen for 20 years (*and thanks to floating timelines that timespan is ever-increasing,) and didn't age, Ace was frozen in an iceberg in the Persian Gulf (where there are no icebergs, hurrlol) and aged rapidly, into an old man. How he got the wings remains unexplained. You can rest assured that the origin of the wings is equally hilarious to the rest of that story.
