We took an unannounced break for the holidays, enjoy our regular scheduled return!
SAW 2008: So we have our second beheading in a Redneck Comic, lots of bright red blood, and a good old fashioned Animaniacs-style dustcloud fight scene. awesome!
Not the first look we've gotten mind you, but check out Sewerman's costume in panel 4. From the beginning we had a vague idea of how we wanted Sewerman to appear (wrapped in toilet paper) but beyond that there was a lot we needed to figure out, especially so he wouldn't just be a mummy. Despite the crudeness of the early Sewerman issues (and the remaining crudeness we still haven't gotten rid of at the end of #10,) I will always remain faithful to Sewerman's original design as the expression of what we wanted.
Sewerman's mask isn't quite ninja-like, or superhero-like or all that much like anything. It covers most of his face, leaving only one eye exposed, which is influenced by pirate eye-patches. One of his many idiosynchrasies is that Sewerman's eye is reverse-coloured, with a white pupil and the "white" of his eye being black. I don't blame other artists who draw Sewerman (meaning specifically Kris,) for changing his mask because it affords little facial expression, but I like his near-expressionlessness. His hair sticks out the top of his headband, a weird lopsided 'do that combines both Eric's and my hair at the time, but with colours reversed.
Rather than just wearing a stripey shirt, Sewerman has a sash (Eric and I were both Cubs, and I was nearly a Scout but quit) over a shirt that only has one sleeve. The exposed arm, his right, is somewhat disfigured, a somewhat personal joke because I'm left-handed. It's never mentioned in the script, but it changes colour from light greenish when Sewerman is relaxed or docile, to redder when he gets really keyed up. You can guage his mood by what tone it takes between those two extremes. Because he didn't have any sort of chest-insignia, I gave him the wrist-cuffs with "S" emblazoned on them.
He wears a sash around his waist and baggy (they appear moreso in later appearances) pants, a reference to the middle east, specifically middle eastern/Indian-themed pro wrestler Sabu. Sewerman: Pirate Ninja Sheik. Truly a cross-cultural hero.
Note that in all this, I did not actually include anywhere for our hero to keep his sword. Go figure.
