SAW 2008: Page 11 of JITS #1 is where things start to suck less for a couple reasons. Panel 1 actually has a kickass (by my standards at the time) low-angle action shot, two things I thought I was pretty incapable of (and turned out to only be kinda incapable of.) We introduce a character who doesn't make himself known to sewerman until issue seven (showing that yes, we had long-term plans, go us) and the dialogue and narration, with one momentary exception, is pretty good.

That exception is the "overuse the shadowy figures," remark, which is just about the hackiest thing you'll find in the issue. The only thing worse, I've found, than overusing a cliche is to call attention to it via a lame meta-joke. It's basically saying "I did something stupid and I can't get around it, but let's laugh at it! Hurrlol!"

Anyway, we were getting close to an acceptable quality of writing here, I think, especially after that with the jokes explaining what we mean when we say "Grout." They're both kinda funny and kinda explanatory, but not overly either.
