Sometimes I love titling these strips, sometimes I don't. It depends what happens in the strip and if it can be summed up humorously (dur.) This one is not my favourite (my favourites, incidentally, in choronological order: 1-3: Regular Guy Enjoys a Hot Dog, 1-14: The promise of humanity lives on, 2-3: The Head-Exploding Phase and RLY: That Awkard Night at Traci's.)
Panel 1 was a bit weird. In putting Katie fr from the camera, which I saw as necessary, I had to skimp out on the details, which means she doesn't really look like anyone. I put in the lighting effect to illustrate exactly what Reg was talking about because it's important to know when to be obvious (and I sometimes struggle with that, it seems.) I also flipped the panel, because the lettering flows better left-to-right ending on her, rather than the opposite. Not that you noticed.
Designing new characters usually presents an interesting challenge (especially when you're as basic an illustrator as I am,) because you really want that character's appearance to signify who they are. So we hae three distinct new characters, the foremost of which has these Popeye arms I like drawing. Maybe you can't tell, but he's also got cauliflower ears.
We'll learn more about these bullies in the next strip. "Ravages" is basically a two-part story, with part one henceforth setting up the world of Reg's high school setting, and part two dealing with some aftermath stuff. So new characters will be rolling in at a pace similar to the beginning in Chapter 1.
If you're wondering about that bizarre font the bully is using, it's called Torgo. I designed it in an overly-complicated fontmaking program (which I don't believe I have anymore) by taking Arial and making it pointier. Its original purpose was to illustrate the awkward, stilted way Torgo spoke in Journey into the Sewer (where of course the character is taken from Manos, Hands of Fate.)
If you're wondering why I took so lnog, the answer may be that I wanted to get ahead (I know, paradox, right?) So I've got comics ready for Tuesday and Thursday, consituting a rare three-comic week for RG. And while we were shut out of the DD Award nominations (it's all politics!) I'm glad for everyone who keep reading. I set up a page over at Comixpedia detailing the stuff that longtime readers probably already know anyway.
