I wanted a canonical reason for why the portal spheres were safe to use to go home with. The other reason wizards use cars to get around instead of portal spheres is that they like cars. Plus, they're good cover story. People see wizards get into a car and everything is normal. If wizards show up randomly in a place with little to no public transportation, it gets weird.

The other thing that I wanted to mention is that the antique shop/apothecary shop that Felicity's parents run do not have the same kind of wards on the doors. You can get into the shop via portal sphere, but just like antique shoppers, the upstairs apartment is inaccessible to customers. Given that Alice and Felicity are family members, they can, of course, pass easily into and out of their home's wards.
