This is the first appearance of Soldier Boy, who generally shows up in the war-related material. In this case firing a mortar in the wrong direction so that he doesn't have to bother to actually do his job after being paid. Why shell the right place for hours on end when you can shell the wrong place for five minutes and get paid the same?
