This is not a sight that would keep hardened warriors from their lunches. Sadly, I had no room to say it in the text, but this particular band of scouts are Newbies. This is not a time of war. There was a small invasion-ish thing from the army of an ambitious Norman lord, and the locals were called out to fight it. My brother, the history buff, says that 1066 was the first Norman invasion. This would probably render this whole chapter entirely historically wrong. However, According to G. A. Henty*, if I remember aright, the battle of 1066 was not the first Norman invasion. —It was simply the first one in years, the biggest, and the only one that worked.
*Yeah.. I probably don't remember aright… but even if he did say it there is still one chance in 10 that he was wrong. However, in historical likelihood, this is probably right.
