The relationship between Ace and the nurse robots has been troubled since the beginning. One of those robots was involved in the incident that injured Ace's left arm and started the chain of events that lead to his actual bionic replacement.

Later what was left of his left arm had the pleasure of meeting the fists of Guntha Gan, a gladiator robot capable of doing things like this to Kreotum, another not-exactly-wimpy gladiator bot. Ace learned the real meaning of the word pain right in this moment.

Observing, quite sharply, that all which was left after that encounter was a flesh container of splintered bones and being tired of having his left arm being injured over and over, he decided to "clean break" (yep), he discarded a genetic regrowth and went for a robotic replacement. The result of the operation was shown here.
