It's hard for me to take this story seriously.

Back in 2006, Bill Nye, probably my favorite science guy, did a gig at a community college in McLennan County in Texas. He talked about a variety of things, like Mars, global warming, and haranguing the government for not working to further science.

However, he seemed to have crawled under some of the audience's skin.

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

All this hubbub over a little comparison? I never walk away from someone talking smack about science–they likely have no idea what they're talking about, anyway. To me, the reaction of the audience members that left I find to be triflingly silly.

I'm sorry folks, but believing in a god does not automatically enable you to be free of criticism. And the Bible, arguably one of the oldest sources of inanity on this planet, is certainly never going to be free of pointing fingers.

Cheers.
