The Bigotry Quota

Hot on the heels of the recent anti-abortion measure tagged onto the new healthcare bill, and their open endorsement of anti-gay legal action, comes another shocking–okay, not really–story of the Catholic Church double-dipping in church and state issues, this time over whether or not they can be a charitable organization in the D.C. area.

The new problem? The Catholic Charities arm of the Church doesn't want to treat people equally.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians….

"If the city requires this, we can't do it," Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Wednesday. "The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem."

Holy fucking shit. Did they really just admit that they WANT to discriminate against people, because their faith commands it?

Thanks; it only took you this long to finally admit publicly that the Catholic Church is a force of bigotry in the world. At least we have it on record.

I will make one concession, and that is: that the people that make up the institution known as the Roman Catholic Church are of mixed opinion on this and matters like this; it is the Church at large, as it has always been, that is protesting this forced secular direction.
