Zounds! Zygotes!

You know, I'm all for granting the Church that they have a point when they say that producing an excess of fertilized zygotes kills off potential future children. But they really go too far when they pontificate about the morality of in vitro fertilization.

Contrary to popular belief, and I say this mockingly, children are not gifts from any god, or at least up until this point there has been a dearth of children demonstrated to be such. If ever there were holy beings, I would say that bacteria and viruses, those tiny beasts that don't have to rely on sexual reproduction, are truly "blessed": they don't have to have two fully-functioning, opposite-sex members to make the next generation. If anything, our mode of bearing and rearing offspring is a debilitating curse, but since our intellects are demonstrably above those of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, we make up for our biological shortfalls with ingenuity.

Sure, let couples do in vitro if they want, or adopt even. It is their life, and their choice. And we really shouldn't let celibate old men and women–supposedly, though all the children coming out against the Church right now is rather telling–in funny hats lecture on the biological functions of other people.
