I should note that at this point, Nightbird is probably pretty annoyed with Masao. Since Nightbird himself is a widower as a result of "superpowered conflict," (although Masao has no idea about that) it's almost like an unknowing slap in the face to tell him that he didn't know what he's talking about (the end of the previous page). This is why I chose to ask permission to have Nightbird play this role in SHELL's "awakening." Before Nightbird lost his wife, he was playing superhero for… well… entertainment, and he changed his take on the world and importance of life when she was killed.
Oh, and the 4th panel here is a Japanese cemetery. In Japan it's customary to cremate the dead, and so the "tombstones" at the cemeteries are actually shrines to represent lost family members all together rather than having one stone for every individual.
So anyway, it looks like SHELL just got "slapped in the face" back, a key turning point in his development as he finally realizes how cowardly and self-centered he has been, and how half-assed his performance was of keeping his promise. To be fair though, it probably would've been really difficult for him to do detective work at the time of just having lost his family.
On another note… -gasp- SHELL finally has a name to go with the supervillain who had a hand in his family members' death! He did not have this info before! It was not public knowledge!
And on a completely unrelated note: Do you miss Lady Ghost? You can see her latest appearance here, on this community project called "Drunk Duck Villains," which I hope to see some of you submit a page or two for involving your own fave original villains! I think it upped readership for SHELL a little bit.
