This is the last of three establishing a new character for Second Wind. It is unfinished. This was done over the Holidays when I was struggling with where to go with the strip. I have moved on from struggling to something closer to dissatisfied. I do not know where to take the strip. I’ve grown tired of the gags that are not really funny.
I have found that the image in my head, the “ideal plain,†of what I want to draw is far beyond my current abilities. Anyone who knows me would tell you that I’m not talking about trying to be perfect or reach the ideal; I’m not driven to control details in that way and quite comfortable with my imperfections. I believe that Plato was right in that the “ideal plain†is beyond reality and unreachable by us schmoes on earth . And yet, for some of us, it is our lot to strive for the ideal. Reaching for an ideal should always make you stretch, but the distance between where I am and my ideal is about the distance between my finger tips and the top of the flag pole.
I guess I’m saying this to explain why some of the postings have been non-comics lately. The campus based comics of Second Wind represent what I have been able to do without really trying. I am not going to abandon that because I still enjoy it. However, now I’m working on developing some skill as well. We’ll see where that leads.
