This was originally going to be the last page of the chapter. By the time we reached this point, however, I'd decided to break the book here, making it also the last page of Volume 1. With that in mind, I decided we needed a more dramatic finish and so - even though I've deliberately avoided using splash pages in Shades (well, except to open chapters!) - I moved the last two words to a page of their own … No prizes for guessing what they are!
