It may sound like jealousy and sour grapes, but don’t be mistaken… it IS! I don’t wanna go into “WAH! IT’S NOT FAIR” territory, but – well, it ISN’T fair!
It’s not just me. I know many online artists, particularly on DeviantArt, who work their butts off to make interesting and funny art. GOOD art. All they’d like is a kind word, or even constructive criticism (that isn’t douchey).
You can almost hear the crickets chirping through the internet! Along comes some low-talent scribblemonkey who draws something dumb and/or offensive and/or bizarre for bizarre’s sake and the comments just come pouring in like a fucking tidal wave! It’s rarely anything more than “kewl pic bro!” or “awsum!” or any other myriad of misspellings, but, at least it’s ACTUAL FEEDBACK of SOME kind! Don’t get me wrong. Myself and others get a fair FEW ‘faves’ here and there, but, speaking for myself, I’d rather get a simple “Nice work. I like that character” than 50 faves!
ANYONE can fave… and they DO. (Or, in the DUCK's case - anyone remember the "FIVES"?! Man, am I glad THAT'S over!)
There’s a phenomenon on DeviantArt that I call “Fave-Hoarding”, in which certain viewers will go through and seemingly just fave everything that’s on DeviantArt’s front page at any given time. It’s almost like some sort of idiotic status symbol – as though these people are going to win some sort of prize for having the most faves in their favorite section, or something. I don’t get it, but, more power to them, I guess. I mean, I’ll admit to, when I am bored, going through and collecting a fair bit of art on a given theme that I have REAL LOVE for – Ghostbusters, Daredevil, 80’s Cartoons, etc., but I will at least leave a few comments on the better ones. I’m not doing it just to reach a meaningless quota. But, that’s just me.
So, people, if you dig a comic strip here on Th' Duck, For the love of all things peanut-buttery, SAY something sometime!
