It sort of makes sense. Why do you think tobacco products are taxed so hard? Because they're dangerous. Increased price causes less demand. People are buying less tobacco products, because they need the money for other things. Petroleum based fuels are just as dangerous. They create smog, which can damage the lungs of a far larger radius of people, than this so-called secondhand smoke. Smog can cause disorders such as asthma. I'd hate to have asthma. They say that second hand smoke kills a crapload of people, but I think that those are just people who live with the smoker for like 20-30 years(and they dont take account of how large our population is). Then, you might get your emphysema or lung cancer. Also, motor vehicle accidents have probably decreased, due to less people on the road. We will exclude those involving drunk drivers. Those are pretty high lately.

Demand is a powerful entity. Remember when the gas prices were around 2 dollars, and sometimes one would have to sit in a line of many cars, that would pour out into the street? That sucked!

Increased prices teach us a valuable lesson of conservation. Gas, along with tobacco, and alcohol(which is pretty expensive, too.) should be used sparingly, as to reduce the damages they may cause.
Increased prices help us practice this, as we usually can't afford to act otherwise. And also, the added price is miniscule compared to the cost of repairing any damage these products may cause. Medical bills, car stuff, etc. Good times.

Just a thought. I was just thinking about this in my economics class, today. I was reading a passage that referred to increased demand from lowered price of gas, and I started to think about it for awhile. And also, it's good to keep an open mind about these things. Cuz, yeah. I don't care for the rise of gas prices either. They're getting pretty expensive, and that will be hard for communities that don't have much to spend. Also, there are people who have to drive long distances to work. They might have to quit or move closer. That's terrible, because then, they have the choice of either ditching their salary, or their local friends.

But, yeah. Like I said. I try to keep an open mind about these kind of subjects. I dont completely agree or disagree with either side.
