Rebecca kicked around a lot of different styles for this neo-kung-fu-master character, but the key requirement for his uniform was that he have a hat capable of covering his scalp tattoo.

So that headgear he is wearing is an evolution of Song Dynasty fashion.

Not sure if that's coming back into style anytime soon, but it does seem effective in keeping people clear of your personal space.
