Although deuterium is a handy reactor fuel, it’s also a great
radiation shield. Basically water with a bonus neutron, it can soak up a
fair share of subatomic particles. This may explain why life first
developed in the oceans. If you don’t have a skin or shell, it’s hard to
keep your DNA together in the face of cosmic rays.
So here’s to water! Enjoy some today.
