Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2.

I found a copy of it a few days ago, and I've gotta say: it's good. VERY good.

The main hook, as the title betrays somewhat, is that you make your own weapons. Instead of paying some abritrary amount of gold for Excalibur, you have to go out and gather the ore (by killing monsters) and the shapestones (by opening chests guarded by monsters, which you kill) and make them yourself.

It's a lot more fun than it sounds, since you can really make some killer weapons.

Also, to cater to the 'Summon' part of the title, you get a Guardian Beast early on. She/he/it waits in the wings and implements magic spells, items, and other things on your command.

It probably says something about me that I read the list (you don't know this will be your partner for the whole game at the beginning) and immediately chose the Devil Girl.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for creatures from mythology; Christian mythology especially. Demons'n'angels! Yeah!

Oh, and…happy Halloween, I suppose.
