A bit of setting info:

Souragne is actually not a slave owning society, because the people who wrote it up didn't want to deal with that sticky wicket, as far as I can tell. All of these workers technically have the same rights as the plantation owners. But things rarely work out like they're supposed to. If you don't have money you can't really enforce your rights, and there's a plethora of poor workers ready to take any job offered to them. The owners often let their workers die of exhaustion and heatstroke in the field, and there's nothing anyone much does about it.
