I'm finally completely moved in and have no shopping or chores to do. (Added insult to injury by shattering my cellphone screen yesterday.) Taking an actual day off before I start work tomorrow. I decided to unwind by drawing.
I hope the local volunteer guy doesn't seem insulting or stereotypical. I mean him to be candid and helpful. I love a local accent anywhere I go, and I've never equated any accent with ignorance – even people I plain can't understand (whether from Appalachia, the deep south, Great Lakes, Australia, New England, or wherever). In addition to accents, a lot of places have dialects, which takes more getting used to. I briefly lived in Harkers Island, NC, which has a slew of vocabulary and phrases I simply didn't know. I grew up in northern WV, and when I had college roommates from southern WV, I had to ask them to define quite a number of phrases for me. I also found out only recently, that using the word "burm" for the side of the road, is WV/OH/PA terminology not used outside the region. (I heard it so often, I never knew it was regional.)
