I compiled a few roadside curiosities for this page (obviously). The mermaid wasn't mentioned in the prose, but they are so grotesque that I had to try drawing one.
My mom taught biology, so she had a lot of (legitimate) taxidermy animals in her classroom. She also had some preserved skulls and pelts prepared by students. (I did mention growing up in WV. Taxidermy was not a terribly uncommon hobby for teenagers.) Most of her specimens were donated by local taxidermists or the occasional generous hunter. Anyway, among the collection was a skull that didn't fit because unlike the educational props, this one was a creative invention from a student. It was a unicorn skull. It was so long ago I can't remember what the horn was, but the skull was a goat. Fanciful taxidermy always fascinated me. As did the actual preserved oddities like multi-headed animals and those with additional limbs.
