Really if you think about it, a lot of the English language doesn't make sense. Case in point "It was all I could do not to (throw up, scream, cry, etc.)" And people get pissed when I say "WHAT was all you could do not to (fill in blank)?"

Or "I was just beside my self!" It means you're freaking out, but if you think about what the literal meaning is, that just makes no sense. :P
