Reader Honza Prchal linked me to this Newsweek article about scientists finding that the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, designated radio source Sgr A*, flared three times this past spring, getting up to 75 times brighter—at locations just outside its event horizon—very briefly. They think this is due to it sucking in material, but flares of this extent have not previously been detected "in the 24 years we have studied the supermassive black hole."
