I think I figured out why my laptop's keyboard was broiling during the heat wave: a while back I'd changed the video card used for Firefox from the low-power onboard Intel video chip to the "high performance" nVidia GPU to work around a lock-up I was getting while viewing YouTube videos. Switching back to the lower power chip for browsing stopped the excessive heat, and fortunately the lock-up thing so far seems to have been taken care of by a system update or something (I hope!).
