After a few years of trying to flirt with Rogue-light games, particularly Nuclear Throne and Diablo (PS1), over the weekend I finally poked into *traditional* roguelikes—basically, turn-based, usually fantasy-themed video games in which your adventurer character tries to make their way through procedurally generated dungeons, with no reloading: when they die, it's game over and you start back from the beginning with a new character.

The two I found that I *like* are the H.P. Lovecraft-themed Infra Arcana, and Rogue, or specifically the somewhat modern-ish version with optional tile graphics and sound FX, sometimes called ClassicRogue.

While strictly traditionally, roguelikes have letter graphics and no sound—the original Rogue was developed for play on early 80s Unix mainframe computers—it's probably no coincidence that both Infra Arcana and ClassicRogue have really sweet, optional single-color tile graphics by Oryx Design Lab, as well as optional sound effects.

And like strictly traditional roguelikes, they're both free. : )
