My current burning obsession with traditional roguelikes seems to have overcome my fear of pure ASCII interfaces, and I found two more that grabbed me:
- Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - Specifically, the ASCII ("Console") version. Something just very pleasant about the presentation of the colored text, and the streamlined interface, and even though it's more or less a generic roguelike fantasy setting, it feels fresh—maybe because it's a take on the original Rogue that's a bit more independent of the widely influential Moria and Hack lines, carrying on from the mid-90's from-scratch "Linley's Dungeon Crawl" (aka "Crawl").
- Sil-Q - Modern continuation of Sil, a more disciplined, streamlined, Tolkienesque fork of Angband, modified so much that the Angband developers themselves credit it as its own game. Cuts out out Angband's town, it's straight into the dungeon; I like the more solid ASCII art style, and the more structured…everything!
