Searsha was once a prostitute. Her mother was a priestess who left her calling due to feeling shame about her pregnancy. Searsha and she lived on the streets with all that brings. Both were thieves and her mother eventually became a prostitute. After her mother's death Searsha was recruited to become a courtesan. She showed evidence of magical talent and when 14 was then hired by a mage bear him talented children. There's a lot more to the story and there may be flashbacks.

Sorceresses also act as midwives and apothecaries. They are experts in women's problems and even offer birth control. Using magic they can focus on both the very small and the very large so are aware of germs and infection. Some specialize in medicine, others specialize in the culinary arts! The world does have polished lenses and telescopes and microscopes but that was to enable non-mages to see what a mage could.

However there are those who specialize in curses and making other people's lives miserable. They're witches who worship a different deity from sorceresses. But that deity is the daughter of the one sorceresses serve. With light there is dark, with good there is evil. One has no meaning without the other. Darkness and shadow is the child of light because light casts shadow.
