So here is a few pretty little pictures and lotsoftext that explain how a number of things work, hereby I avoid spreading this out among chunks of the comic, and can focus on plot rather than explanations.

I mean honestly.. Ho Shin is a great mage, and Marielle is a good witch, they'll boht know all this, so its unrealistic to have had Ho explaining things as he went anyway.
