This strip is probably the first time I felt comfortable enough with poking fun at a comics staple in The Capital of Helsinki. A lot of these fanboy jokes can get a little too inside, and I'd like to think that the humor in this strip can be easily understood by the average person. I don't really want to do anything that's too much of a niche.
Of course, even people who don't read comics are aware of who Superman is. And, I'm also guessing that a solid amount of these normals are aware that Superman is an alien who, at infancy, was sent away from his home planet of Kypton just before it exploded. I mean, Marlon Brando did that part in the movie.
Still, I couldn't help but throw some geek stuff in here. The two parents are modeled after the John Byrne designs in Superman: The Man of Steel. This was a revamp of Superman's origin that appeared in the 1980's.
I also incorporated a bit of Bruce Timm's designs from the Superman cartoon of the mid-90's. He theorized that Krypton was an advanced planet that had achieved oneness with nature. And, because of this, Krypton's fashion and architecture was, like nature, asymmetrical. I tweaked the Byrne-like costumes to reflect this.
