I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do for this week's Capital of Helsinki strip. While I was coloring yesterday's page for "A Very Long Death" I suddently began thinking about a preacher who also happened to be a goldfish. The concept of this strip sprung from there.
More often than not I am under the impression that humanity's relationship with God is very similar to that of the goldfish in this comic. And, well, I only have this impression during moments where I'm relatively convinced that there is a God at all.
Of course, blasphemy isn't the only thing I wanted to express in this particular comic. I also wanted to point out that cats are shameless killing machines. We are lucky that most of them are smaller than people.
Speaking of the cat, it is modeled after the kitty in the film Allegro non Troppo. This movie as a whole is a funny and touching riff on Fantasia directed by Bruno Bozzetto. I didn't follow the cat design exactly, but that's where it comes from.
The preacher goldfish was modeled after a real goldfish. I thought an extra squeeze of detail work would make his dialogue a bit funnier.
As for the human, I was just drawing him without any notion of concept. I thought that he ended up looking like the Carl character from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. As you can see, I decided to run with that in the coloring.
