Yeah, I took a crack at Comic Sans. This is like that comic strip where I made fun of porno dialogue. Fish in a barrel…
I think this marks the first time The Capital of Helsinki has lampooned as aspect of computer culture. The idea initially seemed a bit too insulated for a Capital of Helsinki strip. Still, any semblance of an audience I have is entirely on the internet. So, with that in mind I think I can assume that most of you are somewhat familiar with fonts.
There are a few inside jokes here. For one, Arial has been frequently criticized for being a lazy derivative of Helvetica. Helvetica predates Arial by several decades and the average person can't tell them apart.
Most of the people who care about stuff like this believe that Microsoft just uses Arial as a substitute for Helvetica so it won't have to pay any royalties to the copyright holders of the Helvetica font.
For the uninitiated, Comic Sans is an unpopular font based loosely on the lettering in Watchmen. (By Dave Gibbons) Bashing it is common and many webcomic makers will consider you a newbie putz if you use it to letter your webcomic.
Actually, I think I can reasonably say that Comic Sans is the most detested font in the history of Guttenburg. I think it's an ugly font too, but the ire of some people I've encoutered is almost shocking. When you hear them talk about Comic Sans you'd think it was spawned after Hitler sodomized a demon goat on top of a mountain of aborted jackal fetuses.
The title caption for this week's Capital of Helsinki logo is Times New Roman. It seemed appropriate to go with the default font for this week.
