For those of you not up on your American comic lingo, this strip is a riff on the X-Men. These guys were created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. However, they didn't really attain much success until a series of revamps in the 70's and 80's propelled the X-Men to cult status and then to monolithic comic book titans.

With this came the usual avalanche of media straddling tie-ins. Numerous spin-off comics, cartoons, blockbuster movies, T-Shirts, video games, and other trinkets had an X stamped on them in some capacity or other. As a child I was swept up in the wave of X-Men saturation. These guys were a big part of my development as a comic book reader and they have likely influenced my attempts at comic book making in frightening ways.

I still have a fondness for the characters, but I can't help but apply some post-adolescent deconstruction to the common themes of the stories. (The X-Men are frequently used as a ham-fisted metaphor for racism, for example)

The logo for this week's strip is taken from a font based on the title caption for Wolverine's solo comic. Wolverine is a popular character on the X-Men, so much so that he even got his own movie.

I tried to find a font based on the X-Men logo itself, but none were available on a google search. That's right, I found a Wolverine font but nothing for the X-Men. Weird.
