Well now, we're finally into Chapter Three and it seems that Kalon has a few tricks up his sleeve. Then again, he wouldn't be who he is without a few tricks now would he.

The Church teaches numerous things that give their Inquisitors an edge in combat, not to mention that your average ball of shot isn't going to stand up to the Tech Magis weapons that they employ.
